Shipping Terms

Bill of Lading

A bill of lading is a paper document between a shipper and carrier acknowledging the receipt of goods for transport. Describes the nature of the cargo, amount of cargo by weight, size and/or number of pieces, and the origin and destination of cargo.

Freight Broker

Individual or company that serves as a liaison between another individual/company that needs shipping services and an authorized motor carrier. Determines the needs of a shipper and connects that shipper with a carrier capable of transporting the items at an acceptable price.

Carrier

Utilizes trucks and/or trailers to move goods from point A to point B. 

Commodity

Any article of commerce, including raw material, manufactured or grown products. 

Truckload (FTL)

FTL stand for Full Truckload shipping. This is when you have enough product to fill a truck, usually maxed out by weight. Rates varies by destination, time of year and equipment-type used.

Less Than Truckload (LTL)

LTL stands for Less Than Truckload. This is when you don’t have enough product to fill a truck and the transportation company combines shipments from multiple customers. Pricing can be given for skids, linear footage, per hundred weights, etc.

Consignee

The consignment is the product or the goods being transported.

Customs Document

A document required for crossing borders between the US and Canada, detailing the contents of the shipment for legal purposes.

Deadheading

Deadheading is when a truck is running empty and not carrying any products.

Terminal

A terminal is any dock or hub where the products will be loaded, unloaded or otherwise handled in the transportation process.

Flatbeds

Flatbed

A flatbed trailer is a versatile trailer that comes in various setups. It is an excellent option for shipping heavier freight or freight that does not need protection from the elements. 

Extendable Flatbed

Extendable trailers are flatbed’s that can be extended to various lengths up to 90′.

Step Deck

Step deck or drop deck trailers are flat beds that have a drop to a lower main deck to allow for greater height clearance when moving freight. They are commonly 48′ and 53′ in length

B-Train

Any article of commerce, including raw material, manufactured or grown products. 

Lowboy

A lowboy trailer is commonly used to move specialty loads such as heavy machinery or equipment. It features a double drop, one behind the gooseneck and one before the wheels. 

RGN (Removable Gooseneck)

RGN trailers are set up with a detachable front, allowing a ramp to be created once the trailer is lowered. There and generally used to move long and tall freight.
